When you have sensitive skin, you eventually develop a very particular relationship with moisturizers.
For me, it’s an ongoing quest: I test, compare, switch products, go back… always searching for the one that will finally make my skin feel good without triggering a reaction.
My skin is very reactive, especially on the cheeks. It marks easily, gets red quickly, and as soon as something doesn’t suit it, it lets me know immediately. In winter, it’s even more complicated: the air is dry, the cold is harsh on the skin, and I constantly need to moisturize to avoid tightness and discomfort. On the other hand, in summer, I can sometimes afford to apply nothing at all.
While shopping at Kruidvat in Belgium, I came across the Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion (237 ml), priced at €14.95. I bought it almost instinctively. The brand has an excellent reputation, especially in the United States, where it is very often recommended by dermatologists for sensitive skin. I had heard a lot about it over the years but had never really taken the plunge.
Another thing that immediately caught my attention was the promise of a fragrance-free formula. This is an essential criterion for me, especially for a product applied to the face. Very often, even when creams claim to be “fragrance-free,” there’s still a slight scent (a kind of milky, yogurt-like smell) that eventually bothers me or even irritates my skin. With Cetaphil, this promise felt clear, simple, and reassuring.
I actually use body creams on my face quite often, especially at night. It’s more affordable, usually richer, and most of the time my skin tolerates them well. But sometimes… it just doesn’t work. And that’s exactly what happened here.
In this article, I’m sharing my full experience with the Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion:
the ingredients, the texture, the pros, the cons, and most importantly, why, despite many good points , it ultimately didn’t suit my face.
Product Overview
Who is the Cetaphil Lotion For?
This lotion is designed for sensitive, dry to normal skin, and can be used on both the face and body.
Available Sizes & Prices
- Size: 237 ml
- Price: €14.95 at Kruidvat (it can be found cheaper elsewhere)
I personally chose the 237 ml size to try the product. The Cetaphil lotion is also available in larger sizes of 450 g and 475 ml, as well as a smaller 100 g size, which can be convenient for testing or everyday use.
Brand Claims & Promise
Hydrates, soothes, and nourishes the skin without irritating it.
Ingredients & Analysis INCI Beauty
I always like to check the ingredient list before using a product, especially on sensitive skin.
On INCI Beauty, this lotion receives a score of 15.1/20, which is generally a good rating for a mass-market cosmetic product.
Key beneficial ingredients:
- Avocado oil → nourishes and soothes
- Vitamin E → antioxidant
- Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) → helps strengthen the skin barrier
- Pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) → soothing
-> These are well-known ingredients that can benefit sensitive skin.
Negative points (according to me and INCI Beauty):
Even though the overall score is decent, two ingredients raise real environmental concerns:
- Ceteareth-20 → poorly biodegradable, petrochemical-derived ingredient
- Dimethicone → silicone, very poorly biodegradable
These two components are considered weak points, especially if you’re mindful of the environmental impact of your skincare products.
Texture & How to Apply
Here’s what I noticed when using it:
Truly fragrance-free
Unlike many so-called “fragrance-free” creams that still have a slight scent (often milky or yogurt-like, which has bothered me in the past), this lotion has no noticeable smell at all.
For me, this is a huge plus, as the absence of scent often helps prevent irritation.
Fast absorption
The lotion absorbs very quickly into the skin, without leaving a greasy or sticky feeling, unlike many other moisturizers. It’s very pleasant to use daily.
Lightweight texture

It has a slightly thick texture at first, but feels surprisingly light once applied. It spreads easily and leaves only a very light protective film, which isn’t uncomfortable at all.
By comparison, Uriage and Bioderma creams I’ve tried in their “dry skin” versions also felt light in texture at application, but they left a greasy film on the skin that lasted for quite a long time, which isn’t ideal for facial (and body) use, at least in my personal experience.
My Experience with Sensitive Skin
Honestly, the fast absorption, lack of scent, and lightweight texture are all excellent points.
However, after a few days of using it on my face, my skin reacted: I developed red irritation on my cheeks.

So I had to stop using this lotion on my face and go back to one of my skin-saving basics: a baby diaper cream. I often use it whenever my skin is irritated, as the zinc it contains helps support and repair the skin barrier (you can read more about this here).
I also switched back to a cream specifically formulated for facial use, just to help calm my skin down. -> That’s usually what I do: as soon as a “body/face” product causes a reaction, I switch back to a cream truly designed for facial use, “better suited” to the sensitivity of that area, to help calm my skin and let it recover properly.
NB: I often use “body/face” creams mainly for budget reasons. My skin needs frequent hydration, especially in winter, and larger formats make it easier to moisturize regularly without worrying about running out too quickly.
My Final Opinion on Cetaphil Lotion
Here’s a clear summary, review-style:
🟢 Pros
✔️ Truly fragrance-free
✔️ Fast absorption, no greasy film
✔️ Lightweight and comfortable texture
✔️ Many interesting moisturizing ingredients
✔️ Generous size
🔴 Cons
❌ Environmentally questionable ingredients (Ceteareth-20, Dimethicone)
❌ Didn’t suit my sensitive facial skin (reaction)
❌ Slightly expensive in-store (can be found cheaper online)
Verdict: Would I Recommend It?
Yes, I do recommend it, because this lotion has real strengths: a simple formula, truly fragrance-free, a pleasant texture, and fast absorption. The fact that my skin reacted does not mean it will cause reactions for everyone, every sensitive skin is different.
That said, if you have very sensitive or reactive skin, especially on the face, I’d recommend being cautious and introducing it gradually. In that case, starting with a smaller size is a good idea before committing to larger formats (As said earlier in the article, it’s available in sizes of around 100 g, 450 g, and over 470 ml).
Have you tried it already? Let me know what you think, or share how your skin reacts – it might help others too!
See you soon, Beautifully Moi!
